What is Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy?
Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy is a surgery to remove the gallbladder. It is less invasive way to remove the gallbladder meaning, this surgery uses a laparoscope (an instrument used to see the inside of your body) to remove the gallbladder. It is performed through several small incisions rather a one large incision.
What are the benefits of Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy as compared to open cholecystectomy?
Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy surgery does not require the muscles of your abdomen be cut, as in open surgery. The incision is much smaller, which makes recovery quicker. Patients suffer less pain after surgery and have a shorter hospital stay.
However, with open cholecystectomy, patient would have to stay in the hospital for about five days due to bigger incisions and revovery time. Also patient may suffer some pain after the operation.
Is Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy safe to perform?
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is much safer than the open Cholecystectomy and has received nearly universal acceptance and is currently considered the criterion standard for the treatment of symptomatic cholelithiasis.
