Kidney Stones

Kidney Stones

Kidney stones usually are made of a compound called calcium oxalate, which is the result of accumulation of dissolved minerals on the inner lining of the kidneys. There is no definite single cause, although several factors can result in the formation of these stones.

Most Often the reason for the stone formation is when urine contains more crystal-forming substances like calcium, oxalate and uric acid than the fluid in urine can dilute and at the same time the urine may lack substances that prevent crystals from sticking together resulting in these stones.

The kidney stones may be small and pass unnoticed out of the urinary tract, but they may also cause extreme pain upon exiting and if unattended can grow to the size of a golf ball while maintaining a sharp, crystalline structure.

Kidney stones that remain inside the body can lead to many conditions, including severe pain and ureter (the tube connecting the kidney and bladder) blockage that obstructs the path for releasing urine from the body.
